Day trip to Abbotswood and Stow-on-the-Wold
Abbotswood, a country estate dating back to the 19th century, is surrounded by mature woodlands and near the house the wooded garden combines exotic and native trees. The estate was owned in 1901 by Mark Fenwick, a wealthy plantsman, who commissioned Sir Edward Lutyens to alter the house and design the gardens, with a walled kitchen garden, heathers and stream-side plantings, as well as more formal areas. A lot of Lutyens' original design remains and the present owner, Robin Scully, has maintained this heritage. Those of you who are RHS members will have read the article in the November 09 edition of The Garden.
