Workshops, walks and courses

Postby voiceothevalleys » Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:31 pm

During the last five months, I have taken part in walks and courses which have helped me gain a better understanding of Westonbirt. From 'staff walks' with the Tree Team, to Wildflower Walks with Rosemary Westgate, I have really enjoyed hearing from the knowledgeable bunch here at the arboretum.

Most recently, on the 5 & 6 June, I attended the first Woody Women course, led by our own coppice worker, Ruth Goodfellow, and Jenna Higgins, a coppice worker based in Malvern. I've added a few photos to the Workshops & Walks album in the gallery to show some of what the course involved:

The two days of the Woody Women course had a great variety of activities, from chopping wood, lighting fires with woodland materials, to moving heavy logs with ropes and levers. I was very excited to be able to take home a spatula that I made from scratch at the end of the weekend too! And don't worry if you missed the course this time - there will be another on the 2 & 3 October. More info about this, and lots of other courses on the Forestry Commission website: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/website/forestry.nsf/byunique/infd-738jen

It would be great to hear about other experiences of walks, workshops and courses on this forum, and all the better if you can upload a few images to give us a flavour of the event as well...

More great Woody Women photos up in the gallery including the very jolly but slightly shambolic sing-along we had - thanks to Lucy for those.

Also some photos of the Westonbirt Project team-building day: making rolling pins up at the Silk Wood Barn and looking very proud of themselves!
