A passion for watercolour

Recently, we caught up with Carole Ann Ingram, Wiltshire based artist and Westonbirt exhibitionist, during lockdown to find out what her latest inspiration has been. Read on to find out the new approach Carole is trying out...

Having a passion for colour and the medium of watercolour, using observation and photographs for reference, my style is to use spontaneous brushwork, an important part in interpreting an image suggesting likeness and personality of the chosen subject.

Following the last few exhibitions in Westonbirt, Bath and Newbury and various commissions over the past year, the Covid-19 lockdown has offered me the opportunity and the time to work on new ways to express my subjects. For example I’m experimenting with part of the image to become more abstract although still focusing on the important detail that drew me to the idea in the first instance.

I’m currently working on an abstract of the Taj Mahal having been lucky enough to travel to parts of India last year. Singapore is another favourite and I am anxious to begin my impressions of the wonderful ‘shophouses’ and black and white ‘Colonial’ buildings I’ve sketched and photographed there.

I paint using mostly Daniel Smith’s vibrant watercolours with my favourite colours being Opera Pink, Cascade Green and Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Genuine. My new work includes more portraits of people and wildlife together with other images of my favourite things. I look forward to sharing these with you in the future.
