Friends Fund New Woodland Management Project at Westonbirt
The Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum are delighted to be funding the new Westonbirt Woodland Management Project, building on the success of the Silk Wood Community Planting Project (SWCPP).

The project began on the 1st July 2026 and will run initially for two years, focusing on caring for the thousands of young trees planted in Silk Wood while restoring areas of ancient woodland through traditional woodland management practices.

Led by a dedicated Woodland Manager and supported by an Engagement Officer, the project will engage with community groups who have already participated in the SWCPP, continuing to build their relationship with the arboretum, developing skills and promoting wellbeing.
Activities include caring for newly planted saplings through weeding, mulching and surveying. Alongside active woodland conservation via the restoration of historical coppice, an age-old woodland management technique that encourages a rich diversity of plants and wildlife.

The Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum are funding the project through the Arboretum Development Fund for an initial two years and are actively seeking additional funding to help extend its reach and impact.

By supporting this exciting new initiative, the Friends are investing in the long-term health of Silk Wood and creating more opportunities for people to connect with, care for and learn about one of the UK’s most treasured ancient woodlands.
